Yo Mark, where the hell have you been? Climbing huh? It's about time you guys start keeping up with me. He he. Anyways here are the absolute basics you will need for climbing (traditional, sport, and top roping)

1. Harness
2. ATC/Belay Device
3. (2-3) Locking Caribbeaners
4. Helmet
5. Slings (2-3)
6. Chalkbag w/ Chalk

And that is if you will be going with somebody who has all of the real expensive equipment. After those things you are looking at.

Rope ($180-$300)
Shoes ($100+)
Quick Draws (10-20/EACH) and about 10 minimally is typical.
Stoppers (50-100$/Set)
Cams (around $75/EACH) and you would need probably 15 different sizes.

So that's the stuff that adds up to 1000s fast. Good luck buying what you need to start and if you have any questions give me a holler man. Sorry I have been so busy lately.

Would still need an ATC, most likely chalk, and 2-3 locking carribeaners. But I didn't realize he was going to be climbing indoors.

So when are you gonna get out there brad? There are a couple places we can try climbing kind of in the area. Mt Minsi (Del Water Gap) for one has over 100 routes, many beginner. Give me a holler.

Thanks Kev.. doesnt look like i will be doing any serious climbing anytime soon lol.. i wish i had 1000s to spend on this stuff but that just isnt gonna happen for me hahaha im thinking maybe i just climb in bear feet with no rope.....

Ahhh the Barefoot Soloist. You could be famous. Actually a decent amount of climbers climb in their bare feet.

But yeah really, you should just get a Harness, ATC, and 2 locking beaners and you will be fine. For indoors and for climbing with a partner.

sorry this is so late coming, but you could do what i did--find someone who is about to buy new stuff (not for the "it's worn out" reason, but for the "ooh new gear!" reason...and just use their old stuff.

from doing this, i got a harness and chalk bag...bought my own shoes (120$)...and my friends had rope, atc, quickdraws, etc... so just make tons of friends at your rock gym and they'll chip in soon enough!

Yes, second hand gear is always a great way to save money. However, it is NEVER a good idea to use second hand rope, usually Quick draws unless you know the history. (any drops or anything) But other than that, Harness, Chalk Bag, ATC, you can all use as a used item.
