Who here uses a hammock, some, most or all of the time while camping? They are extremely light weight and if set up in the right location can be the best thing for avoiding the local wildlife. If so what kind do you use and during what situations are you most likely to use it instead of a tent?

I use a hennessy hammock alomst all the time. The only times I don't use it is when I'll be somewhere without many trees or when I have a lady friend camping with me.

I have some Hennesy hammocks and love them. They are very comfortable and most importantly stable. I have used the min all sorts of conditions except extreme cold. They were the first ultra light piece of equipment i ever purchased. I love them for canoeing and coastal walking in South Central Alaska.

Hammocks are great in the tropics because you don't have to worry about the ants, leeches, spiders getting into the tent or bivvy. You don't have to worry about flash floods that tropical storms love to bring. You can set up anywhere!!! You can climb a mountain and just find two trees, don't have to worry about the rocks everywhere. You can cook under your shelter without worrying about the tent catching alight. You don't have to worry about a mattress. It's relaxing and you can chill in your hammock watching the sunset or wildlife where in a tent it's kind of shut off from everything else. You can get adventurous and set it high in the trees and experience the fruit bats and other wild animals. You can use it as a seat for a long lunch. It also can set up as a sort of tarp mozzie net with two trekking poles. So if theres no trees you're sweet anyway.

In winter or colder climates I prefer my tent and air mattress. I prefer my tent if I'm setting up base for a few days or I'm camping at the beach for a surfing trip. It's more wind resistent with its wind channels and stuff. A tent is also good when my girlfriend comes along. A tent is better for getting changed in although the hammock tarps can be pretty good in this situation also.

So to continue my review. The set up was great. I'm getting good at the knots now. The Hiking Pole-Tarp-Patio kind of set up was just awesome. I cooked my dinner under my tarp and spilt the stove alight!! Cos there was no ground sheet it just burnt out.

The wind came in during the night and angled the rain onto everything. But the two things I put in the hammock pockets were bone dry. So I'll use them in the future. I used the weather shield and that was great to keep the light spray off. I didn't get any condensation while it was zipped up.

The material that makes the actual hammock was more breathable than I thought. That lead to me getting frozen in the night. Next time I'll take a warmer sleeping bag or Long-Johns. The wind didn't get through it, it was just cold.

Except for the shivering I slept really well. I'm not much of a hammock sleeper at home, but once I got past the fear of falling out, I slept fine. I didn't get enough neck support so I'll use a pillow next time.

Overall, I'm really really happy with it. It's made my load 2kg lighter and I'm enjoying the light pack. The tree straps damaged the fragile moss on the trees. So that was a negative. I had the freedom of knowing that worst case scenario I could set up camp anywhere.
