Shining Rock rocks, but it sure has become crowded in the last ten years. Still I try get over to Shining Rock at least once a year. There are many other great places in Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests.

Hey Ray,

The Lakeshore Trail is nice, but it's not flat. Although there are not any big long climbs, It rolls over several ridges. If you are thinking about just doing the Lakeshore Trail you'll need to have someone pick you up at Fontana Dam, if you start at "Road to Nowhere" trail head near Deep Creek. A great 23 mile loop would be to start at the "Road to Nowhere" trail head, go through the tunnel on the Lakeshore Trail, then take Whiteoak Branch Trail to campsite # 70 (6.2 miles). The second day take Jonas Creek Trail to Welch Ridge Trail then Bear Creek Trail to campsite # 75 (10.9 miles). Then on the third day back to the "Road to Nowhere" trail head (6.3 miles). If you don't have a trail map check out the PDF map on the park's web site.

A good 20 mile loop would be Deep Creek Tr. to Martins Gap Tr. to Sunkota Ridge Tr. to Thomas Divide Tr. to Deep Low Gap Tr. to Indian Creek Tr. back to Deep Creek Trail Head. This would be some climbing though, Sunkota Ridge Tr and Thomas Divide Tr get up to 5,000 feet. If this is too much let me know and I'll offer some other suggestions.

Ray,

How many days are you going for and how many miles do you want to do?
