The best cup of coffee I have ever had: (Starbucks has nothing on this)
We woke up before the sun and packed up camp. Wading through wet and frosty grass and dodging patches of snow, it took us about 30 minutes to negotiate our way by headlamp to gain the CDT again. Once on the trail we headed East for another hour and a half. The sky was overcast, and there was a definite chill in the air. We continued on the trail and went almost to the top but just around the summit of a 12,252’ peak with no name. Just below the summit where the trail descended to the ridgeline we decided to stop for breakfast. It was still cold and we sit just below the ridgeline so we could be out of the wind. Then the oddest thing happened. In the amount of time it took for us to make our coffee, the wind stopped, the clouds lifted, and the sun came out. Everything seemed to be perfect. Below our feet was maybe a hundred foot drop off. Patches of snow were all around and a slab of rock was behind us giving us a place to kick back and relax. To the East was ridgeline and miles of CDT with a view of Saw tooth Mountain in the distance. To the West was two hours of hard hiking that was behind us now. We sit there for the longest time holding our coffee until it cooled enough to drink. It seemed to stay boiling hot forever, which felt really good on numb fingers. The air was crisp and fresh; the sun felt wonderful. We sit, rested and enjoyed what seemed like the perfect cup of coffee while staring down the CDT and enjoying views of the valley below where we had been two days earlier. Good times.
